Light Lunch

inch of ice between
the sea and
my feet,

surface masked
by frost..

nowhere but
down to

plunge,

shouldn’t swim yet,
it’s been less
than..

an hour since
our light
lunch.

*poem loosely inspired by the Frightened Rabbit song “Floating in the Fourth”. Lead singer, Scott Hutchinson committed suicide in 2018 after a very candid history of depression. The cover above was part of a tribute album dedicated to the memory of Scott and his vulnerable and wry musical voice. It’s not all honey and rainbows, so i won’t pretend it’s so.

bored of the solo
chess match,

missing challenge
of guileful
playmate

poking at
logs in..

fire-pit hoping one will
spark and
flicker,

but my stoke proves
no match for
the

gusty grip of
winter,

i’d love to play
our game
again,

i want to lose to
you again.

when each day
begins at
night,

it makes for prolonged
and welcome
stretches
of calm

before the
waking world

joins in, before
all freshly
risen

litter the
room

once still and
silent,

my heart caged in
self-reliance,

when each day
begins at
night,

i wince at each
splash of
light,

and at each smile
whiter than
mine.
