fought the knot but
never got it
right,
rope over nope, loops
unravel and
kink,
lips pucker
tight,
deepening the tint of ink
in veins shooting
through my
eyes,
i tried, was denied,
so in clown
makeup
i melted,
though i’m pleased
to report that
damn shoe
got tied,
but i wasn’t waved through
to grade 1 till each
eye socket
dried,
so i began swallowing
tears in knots with
each breath,
until i learned a
poorly tied
shoe,
wasn’t an offense
punishable
by death,
just a pressure
that many
kids felt
when out
came the belt
and to this day, when i catch a
kid fumbling to lace up
their own shoe,
i have to bite down
on the urge to
offer them
glue,
or a velcro pair
of steel toe
boots.
