thought a word and watched it dissolve
until freed from memory,

held too long for change to
find me, stiff and chilled on back porch gazing,

taken with strange forms and shapes
consumed by snarl of
shadow snakes

in garden left
to molder..

midst our absence felt
within these
walls.

peeling tape from corners,
oh so muggy mists rose morning
over lens of glasses, crooked
postures painting
hides the
rot

and butter sweat’s spread thick with
blade dragged glistening
from dirt water

daily dangers swamped in sink
badly needs draining
but why bother.

magnetic antics,
splatters of eye contact
‘tween unshackled spirits
sweating musky rose,
plead on bruised knee to
mistress strobe,
fevers under night skins
distorting grins-
spin me to escape’s
fateful chase
in last place
on high-
splash my smokescreen face
in neon.

glad you’ve held up
dry and
well,

pleased you’re a flower
elsewhere,

we dreamed escapes
together,

though never found
the time
,

blaming less than perfect
weather
.

bonfire of dead
letters

unearthed and
torched

sending specters to
their slumber,

we
breathless
blowing embers
,

may dawn reach us
where we
shiver,

eyes shaded out
by smoke.
