in a half woken
state
i sense the room
shake
and know you’re back
for after hour
games,
so we play one
or two,
but you never
lose
and have yet to reveal
your name.
dark humor
first bite of sandwich-
I’m full,
next sip of cola-
the glass
spills,
not at my best
these days-
parked in a rest stop
counting
greys.
she stares
from her painting,
like no one sees her
but me-
the lonely old
voyeur..
gazing up from
bent knee.
was that wave
aimed at
me..
or someone
behind?
held the door out
of pity
or
just to look
kind?
offered help for
the thank
you
or just to give
blind?
i’d be grateful, were i
in the right state
of mind.
sent me
away..
without so much
as a wave-
no smooches
blown
to
the wind,
no fisticuff
to my glass chin,
sounds like
a “win
win“.
sucking on a
slice of
sun–
tryin’ not to sear
my tongue,
though the taste
is sweet,
i catch the
scent..
of burnt
meat.
sweat drips down
stiff upper
lip,
till salt licks my
tongue
heat won’t
quit,
but i shan’t
admit,
it’s no loner
fun..
in
the sun.
grill
to bumper,
steel tides slow
and go,
in a sea of traffic
barely afloat,
shall i trade in
my sweet
ride
for
a boat?
consumed by
couch-
spare change
in hair,
almost didn’t
see me
there,
kind of you to
sit with
me
if only for
a bit,
gets lonely
here
cloaked
in upholstery..
and so hard to
breathe..
must admit.
send out the invites
to the clown
fight-
won’t be watching
that show,
for
reasons
undisclosed..
i must decline,
though you’ve offered
front row,
and cheap
wine.
