that first touch
meant more
to us
than any sea
of words
rippling about
our heads,
we two-
barely afloat
above the
surface.
rhyme
how can you recall
the dates?
that blend into one
clanging
clock–
atop its ashy
mantle..
pleading to be
unwound
by next set of hands
to find it
making
that ungodly
sound.
swift
to speak..
but slow to
love..
when push comes
to blush
and the game
proves
hard
i crumble like
a tower of
cards.
you’re winter on
the burner
awaiting timely
thaw..
and who would
fault you
for desiring
change?
who’d dare
blame
you
for wanting less
of the same?
you shut and latched the
door behind you
for fear today would
follow you in–
to command so much
more of
you,
to sap that last drop
from you..
reserve the right
to tend to
you.
a premature deep frost
gnaws at my
bones
as i reach for comfort
to cover my
soul,
the earth turns over
under my
skin-
right where it’s
forever
been.
after the earth
shook
you rushed a
window
to observe what
remained
of outer
realm
and all its
chaos
reduced to
a hum-
consoled by
change.
on breathless
night–
we set flame to our
final page
and buried a heavy
chapter..
like relic not worth
exhuming in
this life,
then sought out
a fresh
star
to guide us with hope
to daylight.
kisses
in waves,
a riptide
like blades,
tossed then dragged
to the bottom
where unseen and
unsafe.
were leaves to sense
their fate
come season’s
shift..
would they cling
tighter
to
branch
of a tiring tree,
or just fall like they’d
been set
free?
hands in the garden
