a heart holds
hidden
but still beating where
nobody hears
a sound,
i rest my ear
flush to your chest
to feel it
pound.

i’m close enough to
taste your words
before they’ve left
your mouth,
as practice in
restraint-
i shall wait
till they
come
out.
with cracked hands
all over my
years–
i shiver just
enough
to remind me i’ve
been touched.
under
the awning,
it appeared
you were yearning
in ways could be barely
contained,
and it took but
a moment
to see moisture
falling
was not only
rain.
we stalled and cranked
the windows
down
to lure fireflies
into our
car,
then found their sight
a bit too
bright
along with the shine
of a sky full
of stars.
your eyes like
stars
glow
near then far–
vanishing into
the night,
i caught them
once..
then let them
go,
for fear of dimming
their light.
beneath a crusted
moon
we bayed at
noon–
wishing sunshine
back,
under a starless
smile
we watched
beguiled
as all went
black.
where may i
find fun?
how will i know when
i’m young
again?
will i go to
bed hungry?
won’t you draw
my bath?
i hear the footsteps
and know a
hug is
near
and there’s nothing
real to fear.
first bite of sandwich-
I’m full,
next sip of cola-
the glass
spills,
not at my best
these days-
parked in a rest stop
counting
greys.
i’ll pick the lessons
from your
truths
then follow each
down to its
root,
these long talks help
me through-
i’d miss love
songs
if you went
mute.
